The engine in an eighteen-wheeler is typically six times larger than the engine in a passenger vehicle, makes four times as much horsepower, and ten times as much torque...up to as much torque as an M1 Abrams tank. Semi engines are also designed to run non-stop and make it to the million-mile mark, before needing an overhaul. If only your car could do that.
As you’re probably aware, eighteen wheelers are also huge. Legally they can weigh up to 80,000 lbs., or 40 tons, which is about 20 times heavier than a mid-size car. They are generally 70-80 feet long, and over 13 feet tall. A Semi needs about 40 percent more time to brake to a complete stop than a car...which is really pretty impressive considering the size and weight.
A tractor trailer has a turn radius of about 55 feet, which is a little more than the width of 4 lanes on a highway. It can have up to 18 gears, and generally has at least 10. They aren’t cheap, either; it’s no surprise that an 80-foot-long vehicle with 5 axles and an 800-horsepower engine can easily run you a quarter of a million dollars, brand new. That kind of money would buy you a nice Ferrari, no problem...but probably wouldn’t be as good of an investment.
