Typically, problems are easy to spot; excessive turbo noise, excessive turbo lag before the turbo engages, lack of power, and surging power on the road are all indicators of an issue within the system. Fortunately, the problem is frequently as simple as a disconnected vacuum line or a leaking coupler and can be repaired easily.
Exhaust issues are another problem to watch out for. A leaking exhaust manifold gasket or a cracked manifold means the turbo isn’t supplied with the flow of exhaust it requires to spin, and it won’t work nearly as well. If your exhaust is loud and leaky at the engine, you can bet the turbo isn’t functioning correctly. In some cases, the bearings in the actual turbo itself can fail, although rarely. Turbos spin at incredibly high RPMs, and as such require extremely good bearings to function. If you hear a metallic grinding or screeching noise coming from the turbo, stop driving the truck until it can be fixed, to prevent further damage and a stranded truck.
