You’re driving the trailer, not the tractor, when in reverse. The trailer is moving forward into a spot, and you are in control of its steering axle. Thinking about it this way may help you more accurately back up.
Lastly, if you can avoid going backward, do that. The best way to avoid an accident in reverse is simply not back up if at all possible. Try and position the truck in such a way when you park, that backing up is unnecessary.
